Why A Great Haircut Starts With A Conversation, Not The Clippers

You sit down, say something like, "Just a bit off the sides, keep the length on top", and still walk out with something that isn't quite right. Not a disaster, but it’s not what you pictured either. It is a common experience, but the solution lies well before a single blade touches your hair. The clippers come second; the conversation comes first.

Yaz Hamdan, our barber at VIDA Creek Beach, has been with Chaps & Co for over three years, and he says that this conversation is the catalyst that makes or breaks the final result. Knowing how to tell your barber what you want is a skill worth having, because a dependable haircut is built upon that communication, well before cutting begins.

WHAT SHOULD I TELL MY BARBER BEFORE A HAIRCUT?

Yaz shares a few tips:  “Start with your hair itself. How does it behave? Does it sit flat, kick up at the crown, go soft when it grows out, or get heavy and hard to manage?
Tell us about any growth patterns, or a stubborn section that never does as it's told. These details decide how a cut is shaped, and we would rather know up front than discover them halfway through.”

Then there's how you actually live. “Be honest about styling. If you spend thirty seconds in front of the mirror and head out the door, say so. If you're happy to work a bit of product through in the morning, that changes things too. A cut you can't maintain isn't a good cut, no matter how sharp it looks when you leave the barbershop.”

Give your barber this groundwork, and you hand them what they need to deliver the results you want, visit after visit.

HOW DO I EXPLAIN THE HAIRCUT I WANT?

Yaz says this is where most men struggle.

“You don't need the right terminology; you just need to describe the end result plainly. Reference photos help, and we'd always encourage one. Just understand it's a starting point, not a blueprint. The man in the photo has his hair type, his growth pattern, and his face shape. Yours will almost certainly differ. At Chaps, our skilled barbers use the image to read what you're drawn to:  the shape, the weight, the finish, then translates that into something that will work for you.”

When you talk length, keep it simple rather than reaching for numbers or technical names. "Off the collar at the back", "above the ears", "keep some weight on top but take the bulk out of the sides". That tells a barber more than a grade number guessed on the spot. Describe the outcome you want to see in the mirror and let our expert holding the scissors work out the technique to get there.

And be straight about maintenance again here. If you want a look that holds for a month without fuss, that's a different cut from one that needs daily attention. Say which one you're after.  Our barbers will steer you honestly rather than leave you with something you can't maintain.

WHAT SHOULD I ASK DURING A BARBER CONSULTATION?

A consultation is a two-way exchange. There's no pressure to have the right answer. The best conversations run in both directions, and the right questions open that up.

A few questions worth asking:

  • What will actually suit my face shape and hair type?

  • How do I maintain this at home, day to day?

  • What products will I genuinely need, and which can I skip?

  • How often should I come back to maintain this result?

These questions are the starting point for a haircut that fits with your life, and they start building the kind of understanding that makes every future visit easier. The piece on Why Great Haircuts Start With The Right Consultation: Inside the Chaps & Co Method goes deeper into how we approach this, but the principle is simple.

THE RIGHT CONSULTATION SHAPES THE CARE YOU GET

A good consultation doesn't stop at the cut. Our skilled barbers take in the condition of your hair and scalp as part of the conversation, because the two are connected. Hair that's looked after at the root tends to sit, hold, and grow better.

There's no single answer that suits every man, and anyone who tells you otherwise isn't being honest with you. Scalp treatments support the overall condition of your hair, but the right approach depends on the individual: your scalp, your hair type, how it behaves, and what you're actually dealing with. Which is exactly why the conversation matters. Rather than reaching for a one-size-fits-all answer, our barbers assess what's in front of them and advise accordingly. That's the whole point of a proper consultation: the care you get at Chaps & Co is tailored to you, not a default applied as standard.

THE RESULT STARTS WITH THE CONVERSATION

Everything good about a haircut traces back to the talk you have just before it. Share how your hair behaves, describe the result plainly, ask the right questions, and you give our barbers what they need to look after you properly, every time you visit. That's how consistency is built, and consistency is what makes grooming a ritual worth maintaining.
