Before Dubai, Marlen ran his own shops in South Africa. A few difficult financial years forced him to let staff go, some of them friends and family, and the relationship never fully recovered. It was not personal, he says quietly. It still hurts all the same. He never trained formally, learning everything from videos because cutting hair came naturally and quieted everything else around him. Sixteen years on, skin fades across every hair type have become his clearest signature since joining Chaps in 2019. At Chaps Marina, clients tend to confide more than they planned to.
